Né en 1928 en Israël, Yaacov Agam, fils de rabbin, s’intalle à Paris en 1951. En 1958, il est l’initiateur, avec Soto, Pol Bury et Tinguely, de ce qu’on nommera désormais l’art cinétique, dans lequel il voit une fidélité au Talmud : « La vie est une ombre qui passe, ainsi rien ici-bas ne peut être capté en une image immuable. » D’où ces œuvres transformables en bois ou en métal, vivement colorées, dont l’aspect se modifie au fil des manipulations ou des changements de point de vue.
C’est dire que le dessin qu’il a réalisé pour l’étiquette Mouton Rothschild 1984 ne nous donne de son art qu’une idée incomplète- à moins de considérer que le reflet du vin et l’euphorie du buveur peuvent conférer à ce rectangle immobile le mouvement qui lui manque…
