The Parisian painter André Dignimont (1891-1965) frequently exhibited at the “Salon d’Automne” and was closely connected with the world of contemporary writing, largely through his friendship with Francis Carco.
A highly talented designer and watercolourist, he also illustrated editions of many well-known classics, from Perrault’s Contes to “Gone With The Wind”. His painting also reveals a love of popular pastimes and amusements, cafes and public dances, brothels and bars, prostitutes and their clients. In more innocent vein he has drawn the inside of a country pub for his label for the 1949 Mouton Rothschild, one of the best vintages of the century.
